Recommended Reading

There is a great variety of reference books available that are very informative. These are some of our recommendations:

Fauna, Flora and General Reference

1 General Reference 11
A good introduction to South Africa is The Covenant by James Mitchener
For a fascinating history of the early days of South Africa, shipwrecks and diamonds etc, you cannot beat the books by Lawrence Green. For example:

  • I Heard the Old Men Say
  • Tavern of the Seas
  • Grow Lovely Growing Old
  • South African Beachcomber
  • Something Rich and Strange
  • Eight Bells at Salamander

Similar in content, history and information are those by T.V. Bulpin :

  • Storm Over the Transvaal
  • Shaka's Country
  • The Ivory Trail
  • Lost trails of the Lowveld
  • To the Shores of Natal

For fabulous empathy with Afrikaans stories and sheer story-telling ability, an anthology of the short stories by Charles Herman Bosman :

  • Under the Withaak's Shade
  • Mafeking Road

Pauline Smith is another notable short-story writer, for example The Pain.
For sheer ability to describe the feeling of how Africa gets your soul, Kuki Gallman's book  I Dreamed of Africa

A good book for insight into the minds of many prominent people from different backgrounds is Julia Stewart's Quotable Africa.
