Birding Checklist

South Africa has one of the highest number of recorded Bird species in the world. From the largest bird, the ostrich, down to the miniscule humming bird there is a huge diversity of species.

This is Africa and here meat-eaters thrive. Africa boasts the most prolific list of birds of prey species anywhere in the world. Ranging in size from the giant Lappet-faced Vulture that stands 1 metre tall down to the diminutive Scops owl at 15cm.

If you are a keen birder pack your binoculars. If not, still pack them because, by the time you leave, you certainly will be.

Many of the African Game Lodges you will visit do provide their own bird checklists for guests, often emphasizing birds of special interest or endemic to their particular area.
